This oil on canvas painting: “Hop Picking No 1” by Dame Laura Knight. Painted in about 1946 shows a mother and children engaged in hop picking.
The hops industry was a major one across Kent. Londoners travelled in their thousands for the annual harvest which became an employment, a holiday, a social gathering and a tradition.
The collection also contains several tools used in the industry in the Canterbury area.
